Summer Internships/Book Publishing

Sellers Publishing (sellerspublishing.com), an independent Portland, Maine-based trade book publisher, seeks bright, detail-oriented, and reliable candidates who enjoy reading, write well, and, above all, want to learn about book publishing, to participate in our Summer internship program, which runs from May through August. This is not a paid position.

Interns in the trade editorial department are involved in everything from Internet research, to writing reader’s reports on proposals, drafting jacket and catalog copy, posting on Sellers’s Facebook page, attending weekly editorial meetings, proofreading copy, and reviewing book layouts.

We ask for a minimum committment of 8 hours per week. We are located at 161 John Roberts Road, So. Portland, Me 04106, and our business hours are 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday.

At Sellers, we are dedicated to familiarizing interns with the process of taking a volume from the manuscript stage all the way to publication — it is a unique experience. Prior computer skills are a must.

If interested, please e-mail a cover letter and resume to: Mary Baldwin, managing editor, mbaldwin@rsvp.com. Please, no phone calls.

Our application deadline for the summer term is April 15.

How can I submit my book proposal idea to you?

We are proud to publish the work of many talented authors, artists, and designers, and we are always looking for great talent, ideas, and concepts. At this time, we are publishing a line of trade books and gift books. We do not publish children’s books, works of fiction, or academic titles.

If you would like to submit a book proposal for our review, please include a cover letter giving a brief description of the project and what is included in the package. Your proposal should include an outline, an introduction, an illustrations list (if appropriate), sample captions, and text/sample chapters (approximately 10 to 15 pages of text).

Also please include:

  • A market analysis of the potential readership for the book, including title, publisher, and publication date of all similar books, with an explanation of how your book differs from them.
  • Author/illustrator/photographer biography that includes publishing credits and credentials in the field.
  • Include a self-addressed, stamped blank postcard for acknowledgement of receipt of manuscript.

Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like your materials returned to you. Terms and fees vary with different projects. E-mail submissions are accepted.

What are your submission guidelines for Greeting Card verses

Who are we?
Sellers Publishing, Inc. has become one of the fastest growing publishers of greeting cards and note cards, journals, books, and calendars in the United States. Our product line consists of more than 2,400 greeting cards for everyday and seasonal occasions, as well as stationery products including boxed note cards and journals. Our offices are located in South Portland, Maine.

What are our needs: specifically for greeting card verses?
We are always looking for great talent, creative writing, and unique verses or messages for our greeting cards. Our greeting card line covers all the major everyday card sending occasions, as well as seasonal occasions including cards for Fall, Christmas, Valentine, and Spring seasonal holidays.
If you have some professional quality work that you would like to submit for our consideration, we would be happy to review your submission. Before submitting your work to us, we suggest you visit our web site to see the types of cards we publish, keeping in mind that we’re looking for new or innovative messages and ways of expressing sentiments.
The types of verses we are most interested in are ones that are written in a contemporary style, with wording that is not too formal or over-used. We prefer messages that sound authentic and original, ones that are sincere but not overly sentimental. The verses do not necessarily have to be long and we don’t tend to use rhymed poetry or religious verses, unless we make a specific request for that type of material.

What is the best format for a submission?
E-mail submissions are preferred and you can send as many verses or samples of your writing in one e-mail as you wish. Please type or paste the text or samples into the body of the e-mail or alternately attach a word document with your name at the head of every page..

What should be sent with a submission and when do we reply?
Please be sure to include information on the best way to contact you. It’s also helpful to know if the samples you send are available for publication and if your work has ever been published before. It can take several months or more before we respond so please be patient, however, if you do not hear from us within 4 months, you can assume that your work is no longer under consideration.

What are our terms?
Our terms and fees vary depending on the project and will be discussed upon acceptance of verse copy for a project. We usually pay a flat fee per verse used, include a verse credit on the printed card, and provide complimentary card samples.

Is there a deadline?
We review submissions throughout the year, as we are typically publishing new everyday greeting cards quarterly. The product development for seasonal cards typically occurs 1 year prior to the holiday. If we invite you to submit verses on spec for a specific project or for images we provide, we will set a deadline for the submissions.
